7 Common Misconceptions Around Childbirth

Childbirth can be one of the more transformative experiences in life. It is a wild ride, and let’s be honest—there’s a lot of questionable advice out there. From dramatic movie scenes to old wives’ tales passed down for generations, it’s easy to get caught up in myths that can make the whole process seem way scarier than it needs to be. So, today, I wanted to highlight a few of the common misconceptions associated with childbirth.

Common Misconceptions

Misconception #1:
Labor is Always Excruciatingly Painful

Okay, labor isn’t exactly a spa day. My first labor with my daughter was nearly 37 hours... and it was exhausting! But, labor isn't always the unbearable nightmare Hollywood makes it out to be. Pain perception varies from person to person, and there are plenty of ways to manage discomfort—think hypnobirthing, water births, TENS Units, epidurals, and breathing techniques. Knowledge is power, and being prepared can make a huge difference!

Misconception #2:
A Due Date is Set in Stone

If you’re obsessing over your due date, take a deep breath—only about 5% of babies actually arrive on that exact day. Your little one is working on their own timeline, and anywhere between 37 to 42 weeks is totally normal. So, instead of fixating on the date, think of it as more of a “due-ish” time frame.

Misconception #3: You Have to Give Birth Lying on Your Back

Lying flat on your back may be the classic TV birth scene, but it’s not always the best or most comfortable way to deliver. Many people find that standing, squatting, or even going on hands and knees can help gravity do some of the work. So, don’t be afraid to explore different positions and find what works for you!

Misconception #4:
C-Sections Are the Easy Way Out

Nope. A cesarean section is a major surgery, not some kind of shortcut. Both of my babies were born via Cesareans (and I'm SO grateful they exist...seriously, we wouldn't be here today if they didn't!!), and a few other SPH Providers also had Cesarean births. Whether you give birth vaginally or via C-section, bringing a baby into the world is an incredible feat! Both methods of birthing can bring challenges-- and that's why postpartum rehab is so important for EVERYONE.

Misconception #5:
Your Water Will Dramatically Break Like in the Movies

You know the scene: a pregnant woman is out to dinner, suddenly gasps, and BOOM—water everywhere. In reality, only a small percentage of labors start this way. More often than not, the amniotic sac breaks later in labor, is sometimes a slow trickle, and sometimes, it even needs a little help from a healthcare provider.

Misconception #6:
You Have No Control Over Your Birth Experience

While there are always unknowns in childbirth, you have more power than you think! Education, birth plans, and a supportive team can make a big difference. Even if things don’t go exactly as planned (because, let’s be real, babies love surprises), knowing your options helps you make informed decisions along the way.

Misconception #7:
Childbirth Permanently Wrecks Your Pelvic Floor

Yes, childbirth can put a lot of strain on your pelvic floor, but that doesn’t mean you’re doomed! With the right postpartum care aiding in recovery, people can do so well and recover! Common problems like pain, bladder leakage, prolapse, and bowel problems have solutions— Your body is amazing and capable of healing!
