New Program: Clogged Milk Ducts & Breast Pain Postpartum
We are SO excited to announce a NEW program at SPH to help our postpartum patients manage clogged milk ducts, breast pain and mastitis!
Clogged milk ducts are a common challenge for breastfeeding individuals, affecting up to 20% during the early stages of lactation. These blockages occur when milk flow is obstructed, often with inflammation, leading to discomfort and, if left untreated, potential complications like mastitis. We partnered with IBCLC certified lactation consultants, examined the research, and consulted the up-to-date guidelines by the Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine to create an evidence-based protocol designed to alleviate clogged ducts and support postpartum well-being.
What are clogged milk ducts?
A clogged or blocked milk duct happens when milk flow is impeded in a portion of the breast, leading to localized pain, swelling, and sometimes a palpable lump. Common causes include infrequent feeding or pumping, improper latch techniques, tight clothing, stress, and hyperlactation (but sometimes, these things just happen without us knowing why!) Addressing these blockages promptly is essential to prevent further complications and ensure a comfortable breastfeeding experience. That's why we aim to get people in ASAP when they are dealing with these problems!
Our Comprehensive Treatment Approach
At Southern Pelvic Health, we employ a gentle, non-invasive, and evidence-based approach to treat clogged ducts, aligning with recommendations from the Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine. Our multifaceted treatment plan includes:
Therapeutic Ultrasound: This modality aids in milk let-down, reduces pain, and alleviates fullness. It is supported in research and current guidelines to reduce pain, swelling, and resolve clogged ducts.
Gentle Lymphatic Massage: Utilizing specific techniques, this massage reduces inflammation, swelling, and pain. It's important to note that painful, deep massage is not recommended for treating clogged ducts and can lead to worsened inflammation.
Posture & Feeding Ergonomics: We assess and address posture and positioning during feeding to improve musculoskeletal function and reduce discomfort.
Neural Mobilization: This technique enhances the mobility of nerves around the ribcage, thoracic spine, and breast, contributing to pain reduction.
Kinesiology Taping: Research-backed taping strategies are employed to help reduce inflammation and swelling.
Along with this, we make sure patients have evidence-based education for strategies they can implement at home to further improve milk flow and reduce pain! Most patients only need 1-2 appointments for effective relief!
